Jack Firebrase
Jack Firebrace gets introduced to the novel in part 2. He's thirty eight years old and has joined the army to support his family wife and son. He is a working class solider whos job is to mine under the german lines (tunneller or "sewer-rat") . Jack is brought across as your typical British tommy who is in the lower ranks of the army. Jack doesn't seem to help himself while in the trenches as when on duty he is falls asleep and is caught by both his commandeering officers Weir and Wraysford. And gets faced with a court martial. But then Wraysford lets him off. As well as nearly getting court martialed he nearly gets killed by the germans as well. What Faulks i think is trying to do with the character of Jack Firebase is trying to show the reader thats its not all middle to upper class officers in the trenches in dug outs. There is working class soldiers who are suffering more and have much worse conditions and have to put there life's on the line just as much maybe more than the officers. So Firebrace is a tool in the novel to show the juxtaposition of a solider (working class) and the officers Weir and Wraysford (middle to upper class).

It came to my attention last Thursday that i had to make a blog so that my English Literature teacher(Miss Greener),could see how far we were into our wider reading. I haven't yet read enough of Bird Song to have an opinion on it. But i do have an opinion on the novel Regeneration, which to be honest,is not very good in my eyes.
